Did you just read the title? You’re wondering. Your mind is trying to calculate the effort that went into that saying. Oh, wait! Did you just read “calculate?” Calculate? Are you convinced or do you need any more evidence to prove that you’re mathematics?!
Do you know that without mathematics you won’t be able to send messages to your friends on Facebook and you won’t be able to surf the web? You wouldn’t have been able to search for that Nike Air Max 97 on Google!
Do you know that without JC Maxwell of the 18th century, a radio wouldn’t have come earlier? Of course, he loved mathematics. Do you know that without mathematics you won’t be able to access this page for starters and even read the messages therein?
You might want to ask how mathematics is related to the replies I give to messages on Facebook. What is the correlation between my retweets on Twitter and a 2+3? Wonder and ponder no more!
None of modern science’s achievement would have been possible without mathematics, to begin with. What this means is that the modern world we live in is a direct offspring of excellent mathematics. Algorithms in mathematics laid foundations for the birth of computers. In fact, the very first computer program came in the 1840’s. An algorithm is used in data processing. Remind me what the elementary use of CPU’s was for? Complex data storage, search engine indexing, page ranking amongst others, make use of complex algorithms. That is why we can Google! That is why Google has the power to push and arrange our searches from the most relevant. The captivating and fun world of mathematics just makes the world so much easier.
“Why not, I replied!”
“But Mathematics is hard.” “It’s not!” I countered. But really, why mathematics? It is mathematics because:
1. It is a part and parcel of everything we do
We calculate minutes needed to cook. We calculate how many minutes it takes for a plane to get to Washington from Seattle. We look at the time every day. We plan our days with numbers. Mathematics is the way to get success in whatever we do. “Sleep early and don’t waste your time! You have a job interview tomorrow.” What is that?
2. It is logical unlike philosophy which is abstract
According to a philosopher called Parmenides,” nothing” doesn’t exist because speaking of it actually means it exists. In mathematics, we have a nothing in form of 0. It’s a logical thing because you need zeros for positioning and calling numbers. Pray, tell me. What is illogical in adding 2 with 3, subtracting 14 from 57, multiplying 4 and 30 and dividing 77 with 11?
3. It is adventurous
The feeling of subjecting yourself to minutes of playing with numbers, seeking out the relationships between them and actually knowing can best be described as adventurous.
4. It is fun and challenging
Mathematics is the only fun thing that makes people think and have fun at the same time. It challenges the brain into thinking and brings fun and satisfaction after this thought has been proven to be correct.
5. Mathematics is beautiful
How numbers move around and about, side to side, substituting one from each other is a beauty to behold. Mathematics is pure! It is a universal language as everything has been designed and structured to follow a specific pattern all over the world.
